Feeling safe on public transport is paramount, but what if increased security measures inadvertently impact our daily lives? Adelaide is ramping up its safety protocols, with significant changes to public transport. Ahead of New Year's Eve, authorities have expanded police search powers across the entire Adelaide Metro network.
South Australia's Attorney-General, Kyam Maher, announced that all public buses, trains, trams, stations, interchanges, and Park 'n' Ride locations are now classified as 'Declared Public Transport Services' or 'Declared Public Transport Hubs.' This follows earlier legislation allowing police to search individuals for weapons in designated public precincts and to ban individuals posing a safety risk from these areas for up to 24 hours.
Mr. Maher explained that this designation grants police enhanced authority, including the ability to use handheld metal detectors without needing 'reasonable cause,' specifically to detect weapons like knives. The primary goal is to enhance public safety across South Australia.
But here's where it gets controversial... This isn't the first time such measures have been implemented. Earlier this year, 11 shopping centers were declared public precincts, and the Adelaide Oval and Adelaide Railway Station were added to the list before the third Ashes Test.
Since these powers were introduced, SA Police Assistant Commissioner Narelle Kameniar reported over 4,000 searches, resulting in the discovery of 18 weapons. These primarily included knives, along with other items like knuckledusters. A concerning incident involved a man allegedly carrying a filleting knife on the first day the powers were in effect at the Adelaide Railway Station.
Assistant Commissioner Kameniar welcomed the expanded powers on public transport, emphasizing the importance of people feeling safe. She clarified that the new measures apply to any location where an Adelaide Metro card can be used, including trains, trams, buses, stations, interchanges, and Park 'n' Ride facilities. A review of these laws will be conducted after a 12-month period to ensure their appropriateness.
Police will maintain a visible presence on New Year's Eve, with a large-scale operation planned to ensure public safety and responsible celebrations.
