Bayern Munich's 8-1 victory over VfL Wolfsburg wasn't just a win; it was a statement. A historic night that fans will be talking about for years to come! It's not every day you witness a Bundesliga game with eight goals, especially against a team like Wolfsburg. Bayern Munich seems to have found their rhythm, and frankly, they're unstoppable right now. But here's where it gets controversial...
Call the ambulance…but not for me
Wolfsburg came out swinging in the first half. They fought for every ball, won more challenges, and truly tested Bayern's defense. After equalizing with a beautiful team move, Wolfsburg looked poised to take control. Unfortunately for them, they only awakened the sleeping giant.
From that point on, it was all downhill for Wolfsburg.
Bayern Munich has, in the past, struggled to recover when caught off guard or outmaneuvered. But not anymore. This Bayern side thrives when the opposition raises the stakes. The players leave everything on the pitch, taking the fight directly to their opponents. What's most impressive is that they're never satisfied with a few goals; they always want more. The pressing and intensity remained high even when Bayern was already up by their seventh goal (thanks to a stunning linkup between Luis Díaz and Michael Olise), perfectly demonstrating the team's mentality under Vincent Kompany.
This is shaping up to be a season to remember.
Díaz-Olise: The New Robbery?
Olise leads Europe's top five leagues in chances created and boasts nine assists in the Bundesliga (it really should be ten, if not for an own goal awarded on Bayern's fourth goal) after his sublime cross set up Díaz for Bayern's second goal. Bayern's right winger is arguably the team's most crucial player at the moment, and the club is fortunate to have Olise available. The team looks to him for inspiration, especially against defenses that are difficult to break down, hoping he'll provide the spark needed to create a chance out of nothing.
Every time Olise touched the ball, a goal seemed imminent. With two brilliant goals (one with his left foot, one with his right) and an otherworldly assist, his quality and dominance were only matched by his partner in crime, Luis Diaz. Diaz's performance included a goal and two assists, capping off a stunning display. Service continues as usual from Bayern's attack.
It would've been interesting to have had Diaz for the Arsenal game.
Bischović will get there…eventually
Tom Bischof and Aleksandar Pavlović finally started together, a moment Bayern fans had been anticipating for months. However, the start wasn't perfect. They were dispossessed frequently, with some uninspired passing and mediocre positioning, making it feel like Bayern lacked a midfield presence in the first half. However, both players grew more comfortable as the game progressed, eventually contributing to the team's structure. Their services weren't critical to Bayern's success tonight, as Bayern's front three dominated the game.
What stood out was Bischof’s defensive effort. With well-timed interventions, a solid block, and improved positioning in the second half, the pair hinted at what their roles could be moving forward. Bischof seems more comfortable as a defensive midfielder, while Pavlović shines with his ball progression and tempo control when paired with a more defensive partner.
They have all the ingredients for a fantastic midfield partnership for the next decade, needing only more game time together. But here's a potential snag: Leon Goretzka could bench them with his recent improved performances as a substitute.
Is it time for Goal-retzka’s three-week resurgence?
Bayern’s defense is sturdy as ever
Let's give credit where it's due. That's how we operate.
The defense has been somewhat overlooked this season, overshadowed by the team's incredible pressing and ball recovery. However, without the solidity provided by Dayot Upamecano and Jonathan Tah at the heart of the defense, along with Konrad Laimer's tireless efforts, the squad wouldn't be able to attack with such intensity.
Josip Stanišić has been solid and reliable as a fullback, and with Davies still regaining full fitness, his contributions have been invaluable. The squad finally has a healthy, deep, and versatile defensive line, and it shows. Kompany’s game plan seems to work so well because of the team's structure and the anchoring done by the defense. Manuel Neuer, despite some inconsistencies this season, reminds us every other game that he still has it with a top-notch save, like the one he made from close range tonight.
The conceded goal was unfortunate, but the defense was largely flawless for the rest of the night.
