Something extraordinary is unfolding at Bulgari, and it’s redefining the way we think about luxury. But here’s where it gets truly captivating: Mary Katrantzou, Bulgari’s first-ever creative director of leather goods and accessories, has embarked on a journey that blends history, artistry, and innovation in a way that’s both bold and deeply respectful of the brand’s legacy. Two years into her role, Katrantzou dove headfirst into Bulgari’s archives, unearthing treasures from its 130-year history, which began with Greek silversmith Sotirio Bulgari in 1884. The collection features five limited-edition bags, each available in two sizes, paying homage to Bulgari’s signature motifs: the ancient Greek- and Roman-inspired Monete coin, the sensual Serpenti (made legendary by Elizabeth Taylor), the fluid Tubogas, the elegant Divas’ Dream, and the iconic Bulgari Bulgari logo design. And this is the part most people miss: Katrantzou didn’t just replicate these motifs—she transformed them into functional art. “It became a study of how jewelry could evolve into an accessory, and how an accessory could feel like a jewel in your hand,” she explains.
What sets these bags apart is their fusion of craftsmanship and storytelling. Each piece incorporates exquisite stones like amethyst, tiger’s-eye, and malachite, and is inspired by an iconic woman: fashion legend Isabella Rossellini, author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, supermodel Linda Evangelista, actor Kim Ji-won, and architect Sumayya Vally. Katrantzou invited these women to write personal essays on themes like creativity, tradition, and life lessons, which were then printed as miniature books—sized to fit perfectly inside the bags.
Isabella Rossellini, whose parents, Ingrid Bergman and Roberto Rossellini, shared a close bond with the Bulgari family, reflects on her decision to pursue a master’s degree in animal behavior and conservation in her 60s. “Being an icon isn’t a job,” she notes. “It’s something attributed to you—a sign that your life has taken interesting turns beyond your profession. For me, it’s about the detours, collaborations, and the layers that make a life fascinating.”
