Crunchyroll's Price Hike: A Controversial Move for Anime Fans?
The popular streaming service Crunchyroll has recently raised its prices, just weeks after eliminating its free tier. This move has sparked debate among anime enthusiasts, who are now questioning the future of their beloved platform.
Crunchyroll, a go-to destination for anime lovers, has been on a price hike journey over the past six years. In a recent announcement, the company revealed a significant price increase, with monthly subscription prices soaring by up to 20%. This comes as a surprise, especially considering Crunchyroll's recent acquisition by Sony in 2020, which raised concerns about potential changes to the service.
At the time of the acquisition, Crunchyroll boasted a substantial user base, with 3 million paid subscribers and an impressive 197 million users with free accounts. The free accounts, however, came with limitations, as users could only watch a select number of titles with commercials. The subscription tiers were priced at $8, $10, or $15 per month.
Following Sony's acquisition, the company made controversial decisions. They merged Crunchyroll with Funimation, a rival service, and subsequently shut down Funimation in April 2024. This move led to the erasure of users' digital Funimation libraries, which Funimation had previously marketed as 'forever available' with certain restrictions. Sony also reduced the number of free titles on Crunchyroll in 2022 and eventually eliminated the free option on December 31, 2025.
Now, Crunchyroll is facing backlash for its latest price hike. The cheapest plan, the Fan tier, has increased from $8 to $10 per month. The Mega tier, allowing streaming from up to four devices, has gone up from $12 to $14. The Ultra tier, offering simultaneous streaming across six devices and access to the Crunchyroll Manga app, has increased from $16 to $18. These changes will be reflected for current subscribers after March 4, while new customers will be charged the higher prices immediately.
Crunchyroll's price increases have been a recurring theme. In May 2024, the Mega tier saw a price hike from $10 to $12, and the Ultimate tier increased from $15 to $16. The Fan tier's last price adjustment was in 2019. Despite the criticism, Crunchyroll claims that the higher prices will provide fans with an enhanced experience, citing upcoming features such as teen profiles, PIN protection, multiple profiles, the ability to skip intro theme songs and ending credits, and expanded device compatibility.
The question remains: Will anime fans continue to support Crunchyroll despite the price hike and recent controversial changes? The streaming service's future hangs in the balance, leaving fans to decide whether the benefits outweigh the costs.
