Pine County Pipeline Explosion: Natural Gas Outage and Restoration Efforts (2026)

In a recent incident that has left many residents concerned, a significant pipeline explosion occurred in Pine County, Minnesota, raising questions about natural gas availability for several days. Minnesota Energy Resources has announced that approximately 500 customers living in and around Willow River and Sturgeon Lake may face a prolonged disruption in their natural gas service as a result of this explosion.

The explosion took place at around 1:45 PM on January 16, 2026. Due to the extent of the damage inflicted on the transmission pipeline servicing the affected area, complete restoration of service might take several days. In response to this emergency, Minnesota Energy Resources is mobilizing crews from various locations across the state, along with additional contractors, to expedite the restoration process.

The compromised pipeline was identified as a Northern Natural Gas line, which experienced the catastrophic failure.

Britany Shotkoski, Deputy General Counsel for Northern Natural Gas, assured FOX21 that "the site of the incident has been secured, and this section of the pipeline system has been isolated. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported, and there is currently no danger to public safety." Shotkoski also mentioned that the company is working closely with local authorities to investigate the cause behind this explosion and plans to initiate repairs later on Friday.

In addition, Kat Barrett from the Minnesota Department of Public Safety stated that officials from both the Minnesota Office of Pipeline Safety and the State Fire Marshal's divisions are actively involved in the investigation to ensure a thorough understanding of what transpired.

While the exact cause of the explosion remains unknown at this time, the Pine County Sheriff’s Office has indicated to FOX21 that there is no suspicion of criminal activity related to the incident.

This situation not only highlights the vulnerabilities associated with energy infrastructure but also raises critical questions about safety protocols and emergency preparedness in our communities.
