According to Bettinelli-Olpin, 'We talked a lot about how hard we could push it. For us, it was always this idea of, [if] Scream VI is like a secret feel-good movie, Scream 7's going to f— you up.'
However, their involvement in the project was short-lived. They were busy making Abigail, a vampire ballerina horror film, and had already left the Scream franchise before reading a draft of Scream 7. Gillett explains, 'We expanded the scope of the story by going to New York. We also talked about shrinking it down and making it an ultra-contained, minute-to-minute experience.'
