The incident occurred on Saturday morning, and it’s worth noting that this cruise was the ship's first journey since a tragic event in October, where a passenger named Suzanne Rees lost her life after allegedly being left behind during an excursion on Lizard Island. The circumstances surrounding that incident have already put the Coral Adventurer under scrutiny, raising questions about safety protocols.
At the time of the grounding, the ship had a total of 80 passengers and 44 crew members aboard. Fortunately, no injuries were reported as a result of this accident, and everyone was later transported to Papua New Guinea. The ship remains stuck approximately 30 kilometers from Lae, PNG's second-largest city.
Efforts to dislodge the ship began on Sunday, with a tugboat deployed to assist in the operation. However, despite these attempts, the ship remains firmly lodged on the reef, leading the operator, Coral Expeditions, to announce the cancellation of the ongoing voyage. A spokesperson for the company stated, "Recognizing that we have not been able to provide the exceptional experience our guests expect, we have made the difficult decision to conclude this tour."
As part of the company's response, all passengers will be flown out on a chartered flight to Cairns, the original departure point of their journey on December 18. The National Maritime Safety Authority of Papua New Guinea indicated that they were first notified of the ship's grounding at around 6:57 AM local time on Saturday. Initial assessments suggested that the vessel had not sustained any damage, but comprehensive inspections are planned once the ship is successfully refloated.
In light of the unfortunate October incident involving Suzanne Rees, this latest situation adds to the growing concerns about the safety measures in place aboard the Coral Adventurer. Rees, an 80-year-old woman from Sydney, was reportedly not accounted for until the crew realized she was missing for dinner, leading to a search operation that ultimately found her body on October 26.
